Ganellen’s brief as design and construction contractor was to deliver a dynamic new retail centre, including a state-of-the-art library, community spaces, and new active laneway precinct.
A unique initiative between the local government and private sector aimed at reinvigorating a once-bustling suburb, the two stage project presented a number of challenges. Initial work involved raising the level of an entire road with direct street frontage to many busy retail and commercial tenancies. In some cases this road was the only point of access to these businesses.
It was critical the work didn’t affect businesses’ ability to operate at full capacity. By creating a diversion and completing the work in stages, we were able to successfully manage foot and vehicle traffic and provide ongoing access for both customers and deliveries. We maintained an open dialogue with tenants, neighbours and the public throughout the building works to ensure the project ran as smoothly as possible.
Our work on Kiaora Lands has helped create a vibrant new retail and community space, which has been a key component in the revitalisation of Double Bay. Its success in bringing life and patronage back to the suburb’s cafes, restaurants and bars was recognised with an award for Retail Development, NSW Urban Taskforce Awards 2016.
Today, Double Bay is a vibrant hub, with an active nightlife and a young crowd drawn in by the cafes, restaurants and public spaces. It is loved by the local community, and has received recognition by industry bodies.
